Pants and shorts: measure the inseam, ignore the waist label

Sixteen bottoms, and the category with the highest return rate in my own log — not because the quality is worse, but because length is the one measurement sellers never publish correctly.

Highest return rate in my own log — length, not quality, is the reason.

Waist labels are aspirational. Inseam is measurable. Every row here records the seller’s stated inseam in centimetres where it exists, and marks the rest as "ask".

Baggy cuts add a second variable: the leg opening. Two pairs with the same waist and inseam can drape completely differently.

Where it goes wrong

Three places this tab gets people

  1. Inseam measured from the wrong point

Some sellers measure from the crotch seam, others from the top of the waistband. The difference is up to 6 cm and it changes the fit entirely.

  2. Baggy that is really just wide

Leg opening is the number that decides drape. Ask for it in centimetres; "baggy" on its own means nothing.

  3. Drawstring shorts with no inner length

Short length is the most common disappointment on shorts. Ask for the inner leg measurement, not the outer.

My filter

How I keep this tab short

  1. Confirm whether the inseam was measured from the crotch seam or the waistband.
  2. For baggy cuts, request the leg opening in centimetres.
  3. On shorts, ask for inner leg length before anything else.

FAQ

Pants & shorts questions

Why do pants get returned more often?

Length. A jacket that is slightly long still works; trousers that are 4 cm short do not. The sheet now records the measurement source for every row.

How do I size baggy pants?

Match waist and leg opening, not the size label. Baggy cuts are usually true to waist but run wide at the hem by design.

What should I check in QC for trousers?

Lay them flat and photograph the full length with a tape measure visible, plus a close-up of the waist button and the hem stitch.
